Nice, I got the Plasma 6.5 update tonight.

Yes, it was released in October, but it's actually the latest point release at 6.5.4 which was released earlier this month.

People have this idea that if you're on Gentoo gentoo you're always with the bleeding edge, but that's an option if you go with the unstable ~amd64 tree. I'm on the stable amd64 tree (notice the lack of a tilde) and that's a bit more conservative.

You can even mix and match as desired by unmasking specific ~amd64 packages, but I rather keep that to a minimum as that isn't advised and can lead to unexpected behaviour.

Another thing many people don't know is that Gentoo gentoo actually defaults to binaries whenever it can. You only get to compile from source these days if you have a specific USE flag config or binaries aren't provided which, while exceedingly rare these days, is apparently the case for KDE Plasma (or maybe I have specific USE flags set and forgot) ... Oh well.

In any case, thanks for keeping up the work, dear Gentoo gentoo devs 💜

In 2026, I want to change my OS. I'm hesitating between

  • Arch archlinux
  • Devuan
  • Gentoo gentoo
  • Guix and
  • Void

Things to consider:

  • I've already installed and used Arch some years ago; I'm considering Artix, excluding the s6 init (I'm not prepared for this one);
  • gentoo and Guix are probably the most complex distros1
  • Void is certainly the most comfortable choice.
  • It's to install in real hardware: Intel i5-7400 3ghz, ssd 1to, 32gb ram, nvidia geforce 1060 3gb. Yes, I want to play light videogames sometimes steam Main purpose would be to learn Linux, Web, writing MarkDown and Org, zettlekasten organisation, etc...
    #linux #archlinux #ArtixLinux #devuan #gentoo #GuixSystem #voidlinux #emacs #doomemacs #vim #orgmode #orgroam #vim #HelixEditor #zettlekasten

1: complex ≠ complicated

Started for the adventure, stayed for the stability. 🐧

#linux #gentoo #debian

Me adventuring with Gentoo in 2015:

A picture of a man who has hope in his eyes and color in his life.

Me using Debian to save time in 2025:

A picture of a man who is dead inside looking for the smallest bit of hope. There is no color in his black-and-white life.
