A1: posting from London, England.
I had no idea it was winter bike to work day. I have been cycling to work the whole winter so far (920km since Jan 1st) in filthy (wet) weather but today was working from home though

@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite a1: cycling nearby Frankfurt in Germany. In a small - at least from US perspective - beautiful hilly forest region north-west of Frankfurt called „Taunus“. Part of #FrostPendeln with team #fedibikes ❣️ Cycling through the woods on a rigid 29er, an eGravel and a Randonneur.
@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A1: Posting from Zurich, Switzerland. I actually didn't commute to work yesterday as I took the day off to run some errands (by bike of course 😉) and Friday would have been a work-from-home day for me anyways. Nevertheless I rode ~25km (all inside the city limits) and my last "task" of the day was to take part in the #WinterBikeToWorkDay festivities by our regional cycling advocacy association #ProVelo. I also helped with the teardown. Was back home around 21:45.
@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite I did not know this. Seems silly to make it a Friday when no one goes to the office.
@Pionir @ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A1 follow-up: Indeed, but I suspect that this changed a bit since the beginning of the COVID pandemic. And #WinterBikeToWorkDay started in 2013. And it's not always Feb. 13th but indeed every 2nd Friday of Febuary: https://winterbiketoworkday.org/
I suspect that you might have gotten more people to try this on a Friday.
(Actually found the website only now, so far I only knew about it from local events and from the Fediverse. And that website still mentions 2025.)
I *did* know about #WinterBikeToWorkDay but I had the day off, so biked to the ski trail instead.
#WinterBikeToWorkOUTDay maybe?
@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite A1: in Sydney, Australia. It'll be winter in about 5 months, ish. I will "ride to work" in the sense of going for a 50-60 minute ride before I start work, as every day. But since today is #BikeSaturdayMorning, no work for me, just a ride :)
@moz @ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A1 follow-up: Indeed, I already wondered how that even #InternationalWinterBikeToWorkDay works out on the southern half of the globe. Do you have such an event in August? 😎
And this question also clearly showed that we just three complaints and IIRC all from Australia, the southern half is definitely underrepresented.
Hmm, I think, I saw @Ali commenting somewhere, but I can't remember having seen her complaining. Maybe it was a non-BikeNite cycle thread…
@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite A1. Happy Valentines Day! Been waiting for the moment to start commuting again, and next week may be it.
(Currently in the ortho waiting room to have my heel looked at.)
@oheso @ascentale @xtaran @bikenite
Heel fast. Oops, heal fast.
@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite Waiting for the X-ray now.
@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite Bone spur under my heel. Getting some medicated plasters.
@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite I'm here an hour late and a dollar short 😊 in Central Illinois. Yes I rode to work today.
I have matching gloves b/c when I didn't, a guy on the bus pointed to where I'd dropped one and ... we all ended up holding up our hands with mismatched gloves in a quiet community bonding 😊 And when I told this to my neighbor, while waiting for the bus, she said she thought she'd seen the missing one walking the dog but she figured it was under teh snow...
Weeks later, yesterday morning, I head out on the bike and THE GLOVE is in my driveway 😊 As in, walkin' the dog, picking it up from the ground and just droppin' it where it would be seen.
I successfully got out the driveway as the bus was approaching, but she wasn't there to wave a purple hand to thank, but I loved the anti-entropy of Getting Something Back To Its Place.
@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite #BikeNite A1. Ventura County, California. Ooh, didn't know today was a commute by bike day. I did use the bike this week a bit, however. Since i work at home... no commute.
@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite #BikeNite A1. Regional hub town in Northern New England ski country, as usual. Lots of snow on the ground, as usual. I work from home, and I didn't have any meetings downtown, today, so no commuting, and I went food shopping Tu & We nights after meetings downtown, so no need to go out today. I've been car-free in this climate for over 4.5 years, so Winter cycling is nothing new to me. I even have pictures from my ride home in the snow, this week!
@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite A1. I’m in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. That’s where I almost always am 😀🚴♀️❤️
Yes, I knew that today was Winter Bike To Work Day. I work at home, though, and so walked to work 🤣
@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite A1.1 BTW, the reason I knew about Winter Bike To Work Day is that the City of Kitchener had a special morning event for it.
@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite A1: still here in the Hudson Valley, I wish I’d known it was #winterbiketoworkday. I rode a bit yesterday, but today when I thought about the route I wanted to take I decided to walk after all. Too many roads still aren’t adequately plowed to make them wide enough for a bike, and sidewalks are in worse shape than roads. (it’s almost a month since our Big Snow)
But we have gotten above freezing twice this week! #progress

@jfparis @ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A1 follow-up; Yeah, #WinterBikeToWorkDay is just the little sibling to #Frostpendeln: @frostpendeln, https://frostpendeln.de/, a community-based all winter long cycling event. (And not just commuting despite "Pendeln" in German means "commuting".)
I'm now at 363km since January 1st and at 872km since Nov. 1st. Already having cycled 920km this year is impressive.
@xtaran
How can I participate? Is that allowed to people living abroad?
@jfparis @ascentale @bikenite @frostpendeln #BikeNite A1 follow-up: As the general idea is to promote winter cycling and having fun, IMHO you already participate if you post about with the hashtag #Frostpendeln. That's how I did my first season since back then you only could upload odometer states on https://frostpendeln.de/ and I didn't have an odometer and calculated the distances on https://bikerouter.de/ afterwards. Nowadays you can upload either kilometers or use a Strava connector.
@jfparis @ascentale @bikenite @frostpendeln #BikeNite A1 follow-up continued: To fully take part and get some nice statistics, you can create an account on https://frostpendeln.de/ and optionally join a team. Abroad doesn't matter, but I'm not sure if there's a localisation other than German. But there's at least 1 participant from North America, IIRC it's @RayKuntz. There once was also a map where you could see that there are quite some international participants, but I can't find it anymore.
@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite A1. Tirana, Albania.
I did not know that /Carson
Can't commute by cycle until I got one - still crowdfunding & trying to arrange affordable & accessible transportation to Czechia to take a demo ride. #BikeNite #Recumbent #Accessibility
@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite A1: Northwest King County in Cascadia as usual. I did not commute by bike because I mostly work from home, lol. (So I walked to work!) But I biked errands day before yesterday and protest the day before that and doctor's visit the day before that. ^_^
@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite A1: Posting from San Francisco, CA and I did not know that was today but i also work from home and am injured so no biking for me right now
@genex @ascentale @xtaran @bikenite Get well soon!
