The lower quarter of the photo is filled with dark and choppy water with small wavelets of about one metre breaking the water's surface. To the left of centre are two ferries, one SeaCat fast ferry viewed nearly in profile and underway from left to right. The other, a standard (slow) ferry, a little more distant and underway from right to left and nearing the left margin. Above the waterline and forming an urban horizon, is a city waterfront filled nearly entirely with high-rise apartment and office blocks, all viewed in silhouette with little fine detail to be seen. The sky above is an early morning tropical haze, with a visibility of just a few km. In the upper right corner is a newly risen sun, just above the skyscrapers. It's brilliant light causing multiple shadows where the high-rise towers block the sunlight. Between these shadows are numerous sunbeams shining through the castellated cityscape behind and onto the water below. This is a black and white maritime photo of a lighthouse in landscape format. Bjugnfjorden, Norway (2017). Centred in the image is an octagonal, brick built, lighthouse set on a tiny, rocky islet in coastal waters. The sea surrounding the lighthouse is dead calm with only the smallest ripples disturbing the almost smooth surface. The sea covers the image from the base to a little above the halfway-up point where instead of a horizon between the sea and sky, there is a long and low level island that stretches from the left to the right margins. Our lighthouse is built on a islet that's about 10 metres long, near tear-drop shaped and rises no more that a metre above the water. This lighthouse is unusual, rather than being tall, imposing and column like - this one is octagonal, brick built and slightly 'house like'. The structure has 4 floors with white framed, rectangular windows on each of the 8 sides on the 3 upper floors, an octagonal pitched, tiled roof and a short lighthouse lantern on the right side. At the base of the lighthouse is a short, 3 or 4 metre, concrete jetty that stretches towards the camera, while on the right side there are two lines running out into the water, perhaps for mooring? The lighthouse is the iconic Norwegian Kjeungskjær Lighthouse (Kjeungskjær Fyr). Like so many Norwegian lighthouses, it is unlit for part of the summer on account of the midnight sun.
