This is a black and white street photo in landscape format of a sampan water taxi waiting for business in Aberdeen Harbour, Hong Kong (2017).

Surrounding the centre of the photo is the stern of an aging wooden sampan water taxi floating a few metres from a stone harbour wall. The sampan is painted multiple times what once was white and is now a flaking grey. The stern is wide and flat, with a rudder stock in the centre and a small exhaust on the lower left side. The sides taper slightly towards the bow, which is about half the width of the stern. The sides are surrounded with multiple used car tyres being repurposed as fenders. A metal frame arches over the boat and supports numerous bamboo poles that in turn support a fabric cover that descends about half a metre over the sides protecting the boat and occupants from the frequent and biblical tropical deluges. Sitting in the stern and holding the tiller is an older Boat Dweller (often called Tanka) woman. She is is looking to the right with her head viewed in profile. She has large white hair, a weathered face and is wearing a floral blouse and a sleeveless jacket. The Boat Dwellers are an ethnic group in Southern China, the older generations often still live aboard their boats.
