#deltachat boasts easy onboarding. Sure. I downloaded the app and picked a display name, and that was it.
But that is super confusing. Where do my account details live? Only on my phone?
I can “add second device” through QR code. Does that mean if I only have it on my phone and I lose my phone, I’ll have no way of recovering my account?
There’s a lot of mention about using an email account for the service, but I can’t see that anywhere in the iOS app.
If I add a second device, will message threads automatically sync between devices? Or are my encrypted conversations stored on a server from which my devices will retrieve them?
Where is my encryption key stored? Is that what I’m copying when adding a second device?

Easy onboarding for sure, but I’m left with a million unanswered questions. Can’t really recommend the app to anyone if I can’t explain how it even works 🥴
