@ascentale @grammasaurus @bikenite A6. Like Phil, I think I gained awareness of #Frostpendeln through @xtaran
I'm not sure of specifically Mastodon things, but there are of course various initiatives that cycle advocates do like Bike to Work, Bike to School, and I can't remember the "catchy" names, but there are initiatives about biking a certain amount per month, or reducing sub-5 mile trips with the car by taking a cycle instead.
The hashtag #CarryShitOlympics amuses me. #BikeNite
@meganL @ascentale @grammasaurus @bikenite #BikeNite A6 follow-up: Ah, right, there's also #30DaysOfBiking each April.
@meganL @ascentale @grammasaurus @bikenite @xtaran
What's the disaster recovery by bike one? I can't remember it.
@cainmark @ascentale @grammasaurus @bikenite Oh, yeah. Disaster Relief Trials. But it really seems very haphazard now as organizing it doesn't seem to make it happen on an annual basis anywhere.
It really ought to be a growing movement, IMO.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite #BikeNite A6: Taking part in #Frostpendeln for 4 years or so now and it always has been fun.
I also take part in the national #BikeToWork campaigns, but they're somehow less fun as they just count days, not distance. And you can only count commuting, not doing errands by bicycle.
With @frostpendeln you can also track how many winter kilometers you did on a bicycle, on a pedelec (IIRC a class 1 e-bike in the US) and an s-pedelec (IIRC ~ class 3).
@meganL #BikeNite A6 follow-up: The general idea seems to show off that you can use bicycles also in winter and to motivate others to do so, too. That's likely the most visible part. For me it's also nice to see the comparison to previous years and how much of cycling was commuting, errands and leisure. They also publish overall statistics how many kilometers the participants rode + on what type of cycle, IIRC every week or at least every month. They also organise fundraisers based on distance.
@grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite A6. I am only because of @xtaran !
I tried riding for a short 20-30 minutes in ~25 degree F weather last week. I had been traveling and was not well-prepared. My fingertips and toes were cold, but my core was warm and I was sweating.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite #BikeNite A6 follow-up: Oh, right! My previously praised "warm" Endura gloves failed badly during my winter holidays, even with 2 pairs of thin inner gloves. But we also had down to -10℃ (15℉) and cycled up to 33km (20mi) a day, worst combo was 27km (17mi) at around -6℃ (21℉). Bought new Roeckl "x-tra warm" winter gloves during that tour. 😁 Also in hi-viz of course. (I'm though not so happy with my initial choice for the "trigger finger" layout.)
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite #bikenite A6 - never heard of it but looks a great initiative. We can’t get the roads clear for cars and pedestrians- little hope for bikes at the moment! As a country we are just not set up for snow!
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite Q6 I've never heard of it, but it's like just commuting by bike in winter, yeah? I never really understand making a big deal of these things but then maybe they're not aimed at #BikeNite folk who I assume are doing whatever they do week in week out without the need for a hashtag. If they get more people giving riding a go, that's a good thing, mind.
@pete @ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite Fully agree! You took the words right out of my m... brain.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite A6. Yes, of course I know what Frostpendeln is because it is quiet known in my German bike bubble. But I don't do it on purpose because I simply use my bicycle for daily life to get around – whether it's cold or not.
@ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite #bikenite #bikeTooter #frostpendeln A6 I am participating in #frostpendeln (or frost commuting) for the third time this year. The motto is:From 01. November 2025 to 28. February 2026 we collect kilometers and together create more attention for the fact that bicycles are also suitable as commuting vehicles in winter. Motivating, fun and a low key positive attitude. And you can get a sticker.
@RayKuntz @ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite A6 Yes, like Racoon I am participating and this year you could really call it „frost“ as it is a cold winter for Germany. But we collect all kilometers on a website driven by bike or pedal assisted ebikes. So, even for fun and for shopping counts. And I do the „taunustaler“ battle for meters in hight between 24th and 31st December. Collecting HMs for a good cause in my middle hilly area.
@Jay23Jay @RayKuntz @ascentale @grammasaurus @frostpendeln @bikenite As a young boy living in Frankfurt north west I used to cycle to Hohemark and beyond to clear my head. But these days way to many carbrains spoil the excitement – and honestly my age and fitness too. So I take the bus.

A6. Found out about just recently. I've been using #FrostBike and #WinterBike too.
#Coffeneuring is pretty popular in the Fall.
#30DaysOfBiking is in April.
May has #BikeToWirkWeek and the #RideOfSilence
