I'm really unsure which phone I should aim for…

- Fairphone 6: Best repairability, long-term support, the ecological option but not perfectly secure
- Pixel 9 or 10: Highest security (even against cops) but questionable repairability, awful manufacturer
- (Used) Sony Xperia 10 V: cheapest option, supports SailfishOS (yolo!)

I really wish @Fairphone would make a phone that meets the high standards of Graphene and Calyx to really tick all the boxes.

Fairphone's problem is that they are obscenely over priced for no clear reason.

In my mind, pixels are the best compromise..

longevity, good features, unlockable bootloaders.

There are no purely good choices in this domain, only shades of bad and worse.

If pinephone can make a $150.00 ish smart phone, why can't Fairphone?

Something doesn't add up here.

@FelisCatusDomesticus @Fairphone I don't see how the Fairphone 6 is "obscenely overpriced"? In my region it costs 550€, that's considerably less compared to many other phones while providing something way better and many years of updates.

I can't find any 150$ phone from Pine64 either, only their extremely outdated Pinephones with the Pro being at 600€ and out of stock too. I'm somewhat confused about your arguments.

@Natanox @Fairphone I'd personally love Plasma Mobile on a Linux-phone. But I don't trust Waydroid to essentially run a second OS instance for the Android apps I still need.
So I'll personally wait for the price drops in february and get a Pixel 9 Pro XL.
And while Pixels are all glue and proprietary parts, they do have a very mature repair community with every shop stocking the parts by default. Can't say that about Sony or my current Xiaomi.
Fairphone sadly lacks the IP rating for me and ages quickly with its lesser specs at a high price. I want to keep my phone for a few years if possible.

If we had a good compat-layer for Android-Apps for Linux, that would really break Googles hold.

Just my opinions of course.

@Nicro @Fairphone Don't really agree on the current Fairphone having lesser specs, the hardware they used this time is quite capable. The IP rating of course is a thing.

Their current pricing (550€ for the newest device) seems rather reasonable honestly, compared to other phones and given they need to offset not making all those bloody ad- and preinstalled-system-app deals in this broken economy.

@aurelia My current OnePlus 7 Pro got USB-C 3.1 and in 7 years I never found a real usecase for it. The storage / protocol isn't fast enough and tethered internet never goes over 40mb/s anyway. MHL doesn't seem to be concerned with the USB standard either.

Of course it would be nicer, but if 2.0 makes the device a little bit cheaper and more affordable for more people I'm okay with that personally.

@Natanox well, honestly, thinking about it some more, it does make sense for the fairphone specifically because i'm pretty sure it's a replacable board with pogo pins.

@aplanteatingant I don't know SailfishOS first-hand yet, have no experience with it. I've considered doing it anyway and pay for the C2, but in the end 550€ is too much money for something I don't know I'd actually enjoy. The Xperia 10 V is just an option because 200€ is considerably cheaper, and I know I could also flash it to /e/OS of which I know works well as daily driver for me.

@Natanox To get the best impression of what it's like to use a Sailfish OS smartphone, I would recommend getting a used Xperia 10 III first. It is the last Xperia model officially supported by #Jolla. Because of the dirastic changes of google, i will no longer buy phones whose bootloader cannot be unlocked.
(i preferred postmarketos first because it has the most support overall, a nice community, and is lightweight.)

@zaire @a_blahaj To be fair, security is their whole stick and the fact they managed to make it so secure whole governments are pissed off and try to frame it as a tool for criminals (French police semi-officially treats it as "highly suspicious item") because their cracking tools don't work is quite an achievement.

It's just so fucking annoying how they or their followers keep trash-talking *everything* else at any opportunity or even accuse other projects of having an agenda against them.
