Shrek has always been the poster child of merchandising. So there's no surprise that Stern made a pinball machine out of the theme, although be that it was a retheme of their earlier Family Guy pin. I guess part of the retheming was to make all the playfield decorative parts cheaply, so Stern tapped into McDonalds' Happy Meal toys.
The playfield features Shrek himself, Fiona, Puss, Donkey and Gingerbread man, all of which started their lived as battery operated talking toys. They were gutted, glued into certain pose and bolted onto the playfield.
This isn't unique thing for Stern, but a curious detail of how they sped up the retheming process so they didn't have to sculpt the characters themselves.
On closer inspection you can still see the power switch and speaker holes in them, although the Donkey is the only one you can see without looking at them from behind the machine.
