@impactology In Germany, most people rent, they don't buy houses 😉 Real estate is very expensive, even two good incomes won't enable you to buy an appartment i.e. in Munich if you also want kids. We lost a lot in the last 3 decades of social benefits. It is not that easy any longer to build up some wealth. It was easier, when I was young. Our social politics suffered a lot in the last decades. Now the christian democratic party wants to kill even more in social welfare & education! @Npars01

@Npars01 @impactology I'd guess it depends on why people go to ivy league universities to study. The reason WHY is important. Real curiousity about sciences, the urge for comprehension, might prevent the worst in personality damage.

I think mostly they go for credential signalling benefits that gets them heard and respected by people in any room, for life. Be it the labour market or even marriage, the social capital and receptivity they get from people for their thoughts and ideas even if they are shitty ideas lasts for life.

@impactology what a superficial, unsocial reason! I hope, there are still students out there, who study for the sake of knowledge and comprehension. We need people who do research, analytics, help to understand nature! Humankind's future might depend on there work. @Npars01

Sure those who can afford to stay in academia can do for the non-superficial reasons you listed, otherwise given memory doesn't retain what the your work environment doesn't re-trigger a large amount of knowledge they learnt will inevitably fade away and so the utility of the credential then is to land them interviews at bigtech where ATS scans for shiny brand name uni logos

With that credential they will never have to focus on marketing themselves, their brand name uni will do that for them.

Meanwhile the self-taught or those without prestige credential perpetually have to figure out making side projects, doing outreach via proposals, demos. Just so much on the presentation and marketing of their skill apart from the skill development. Meanwhile the credentialed can just ride on their badge for life.

@impactology you see education in general rather negative, or do I missunderstand ? Academia also gives knowledge to the next generation. Universities do exist to help develop a future and not to destroy it or overpower and direct society like some religions do. In free democracies gaining knowledge and giving knowledge is important part of social & scientific & technical development. We cannot do without. We'd parish as a species.
