Planning for a multimodal trip to Sado Island this Spring, there are two ferries to choose from: (1) Naoetsu -> Yashima at the southern tip of Sado; or (2) Niigata -> Lake Kamo on the eastern side of the Sado City basin. There are tradeoffs.

(1) Is a shorter train trip from Nagoya, but maybe a 3 or 4 hour ride to the city from the port, with hills.

(2) Is a longer train trip, but a short and flat (but urban) ride to the city.

I'm wavering … any thoughts?
