Rōbai is one of the 'Four Friends of the Snow' (雪中四友 'Setchū-no-shiyū'), 4 plants (including plum, camellia and narcissus) that flower in the snow.
Known as wintersweet in English, rōbai were introduced to Japan from China in the 17thC.
They are not related to the Japanese plum.
Rōbai can be written with the characters '臘梅' (12th month) or '蠟梅' (wax plum).
'臘' or 'rō' was the name given to the 12th month in the lunar calendar, which now corresponds to February (when wintersweet is in bloom).
