Basically in the end the common ground is ZIP and RAR with a hand full of options (look for "aggregated data").
(That page and all of its links takes a time to read and getting used to though...)
@agowa338 I recall some security analysis about ZIP being a disaster.
As for RAR, the proprietary malice that sticks to it makes me wary. Its assessment is rather damning.
