@djlink Discord was "enshittified" through and through before the term even existed, and all the alternatives that exist (XMPP, IRC, TeamSpeak, Matrix, Revolt, Telegram, DeltaChat, Signal) straight-up suck for a whole host of reasons ranging from:
- poor/nonexistent security (as is the case for 1) delta chat and disabling TLS 1.2 security features just to enable RSA-1024 encryption support, and 2) IRC, an incredibly dated communications protocol), to;
- lack of functioning moderation tools (see: Matrix servers being rendered unusable by genuinely horrible people running spambots), to;
- poor privacy implications (Telegram and Signal both require a phone number you own to function; the former is run by a tech bro who has handed user data to goverments before and will bother you to death over weird crypto-coin crap; the latter's idea of privacy is rather vague, despite specifying E2EE in the spec)
- they're too niche to have an actually active, decently-sized userbase (see: XMPP)
An IPO isn't going to change anything at this point.
