ever since ep5 or so I've had the feeling the show have been rushing through the annihilation of most angels until only a few would be left and the really fleshed out part of the plot would kick back in

I don't wanna say those episodes are filler but they'd be hanging on a really strained thread weren't it for the glimmers of backstory and the new characters that get introduced

the angel fights didn't contribute all that much to character development beyond shinji, asuka and rei getting more used to each other and getting way more skilled as pilots, and any tense moment ended up working out fine in the end without any unexpected permanent impacts to the story

but ep14 seems to be the point where the rush is over, judging by the recap of past events and the name-drop of several important sounding plot points

I'm hyped again

I have neglected talking about rei at all in this thread so far so I figured I should drop a line or two about her

ever since I've seen her in the opening I had a feeling the blue hair and red eyes weren't just a case of random unnatural anime character colors, evangelion does NOT feel like the kinda show to make those design choices for nothing

she appearing to shinji for a split second in the first episode before he's even ever seen her reinforces my feeling that something really big is going on with her but I have no idea where to even start guessing, and she being near-totally silent doesn't help in the slightest

the result of some kinda human experimentation seems like a likely basic guess here, especially considering she's the "first children" and her eva appears to be the earliest action-ready prototype.. maybe an attempt by NERV to "create" their own pilots before discovering some people are naturally capable of piloting an eva?

rei is easily one of the most intriguing characters together with shinji's dad

I've also been thinking about the evangelions' own abbreviation as "eva"s, I'm fairly confident that name is supposed to be interpreted in an adam&eve way (especially after adam is the name of an immature angel shinji's dad is holding onto)

I don't remember when adam is first shown hence the really broad spoiler range in the CW lmao

I was so damn right this is where the show gets serious again, best episode since the early ones

after kaji teasing at a lot of the picture being hidden from her, and ritsuko lying to her with a straight face, misato seems to have nearly reached a breaking point with the NERV leadership

unit 01 appears to go berserk again and this appears to alarm everyone more than last time from ep2 for some reason

ritsuko confirms evas are copies of angels

and of course shinji's inner dialogue that feels like it might change something in him permanently..?

ep16 was seriously absolute cinema

suzuhara is the 4th pilot????????? in hindsight it makes sense (in a non-in-universe way) cause he's the only person in shinji's school who has a standout design but still that was unexpected as hell

he seems to be the most neurotypical of the pilots so far but I'm sure the show has just never gone in depth about him

also something tells me he's either gonna die or smth bad is gonna happen fast cause I've NEVER seen him in random fanart or out of context memes over the years, unlike shinji, asuka and rei
