@16af93 They cannot. What they do is intermittently unblocking you.
The scheme is like this:
* Unblocks you
* Makes their post
* Blocks you so that mastodon hides both their post and the notification about it from you but not for everyone else.
* Everyone else can see their post. You cannot.
That gets used for doxxing and mobbing all of the time but apparently everyone (that hasn't personally experienced it) thinks this is exactly how it should work...

Our instance is currently facing a $180 hosting bill and I just got notification that our services may be degraded (prior to the bill's due date).
I'm not immediately able cover but feel our instance hosts critical protest coverage currently and historically over the passed few years.
We have about two weeks to locate the needed funds.
Can you spare few bucks to keep the lights on?

In the last week alone our instance has moved nearly half a terabyte of traffic per day.
When I first setup this instance I was stably housed and had an awesome internet connection so the primary costs were power and admin time. At that time it only cost about $50/mo to host.
However since that time life circumstances have made me housing insecure and forced our instance to be run in the cloud, increasing our costs to $150 - $200 / mo

Hey, I wanted to first off say welcome to new followers and people who have shared content from this masto instance!
I think talking about and sharing urgent breaking news is a critical task to make and keep the Fediverse a vibrant place where important conversations happen. This is a critical function that will enable more and more people to make the jump off of corporate owned websites.
If you also think this is important please consider supporting this instance.

One for #mastoadmin - I have reason to believe the UK government may ban Twitter within a week or two, so you may see an influx of users.
Be prepared to close registrations early in order to prevent server instability, it will automatically direct users to other servers for sign up.
