When Paris was paved with wooden cobblestones.

Passage Saint‑Maur still has a few of those wooden blocks left, some of the last in the city.

In the 1800s Paris used wood because it made the streets quieter, and it was cheaper to replace.

But most were removed because they rotted or became slippery, which is why the surviving ones in Passage Saint‑Maur are so rare.
