Yule begins today, coinciding with the Winter Solstice. This marks the shortest day and longest night of the year and celebrates the symbolic rebirth of the sun as the days begin to lengthen. It has its origins with Germanic and Norse peoples.

Many modern Christmas traditions, such as the Yule log, decorating with evergreen trees, holly, ivy, and mistletoe, and even the concept of the 12 Days of Christmas, have their roots in ancient Yule customs.

Sunset from our house here on Skye. The image captures the dramatic sky with vibrant orange and yellow hues near the horizon, fading into soft purples and blues above.
Silhouetted trees and a white wall in our garden frame the view, adding depth to the landscape.
The scene is a peaceful evening moment, captured as the sun was just setting behind the distant cliff line.
Such vivid colours are caused by sunlight passing through more atmosphere at a low angle, scattering shorter wavelengths and allowing longer red and orange wavelengths to dominate.  It’s the end of the shortest day of the year.
