What is "the 2nd sentence" in this #page42 game?

Does the end of a sentence that begins on the previous page count?

If not, the next sentence in the second book I grabbed (the first one was a language textbook and had a gap text there) starts with direct speech. Should I quote the first sentence of that (which is pretty gruesome)?
