In Japan, UNESCO heritage site Shirakawa is implementing measures to deter bears from entering the village, located in a remote valley in central Japan, roughly halfway between Tokyo and Osaka. The surge in bear sightings is attributed to a growing bear population and a shortage of their natural food sources such as acorns and beechnuts.
