The Tompiro inhabited Abo Pueblo. They were important traders, exchanging valuable salt from the Salinas region for bison products and other goods with Great Plains tribes, and acted as intermediaries between the Plains and Rio Grande Valley peoples. The pueblo structures were built with local red sandstone. The village was abandoned around 1672 due to disease, drought and Apache raids.
