en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swan_goose Native to Asia/Russia. These probably did not fly here from there... We saw these photogenic birds at Delta Pond. Their bright orange beaks and legs contrast beautifully with their brown and white plumage. There is a brown stripe down the backs of their otherwise white necks. Their lovely deep brown-and-white striped backs accessorize their bright white undersides.

Rainy Sunday morning in the yard. A Sharp-shinned Hawk has what I believe was a Golden-crowned Sparrow, in its talons.

A Sharp-shinned Hawk, a small raptor with a gray-brown back, barred white and orange breast, gray crown and white throat is perched on the ground with a dead bird in its talons. The prey was likely a Golden-crowned Sparrow.

Here's some GREAT news: the first kākāpō chick in four years hatched on Valentine's Day! Kākāpō are nocturnal, flightless parrots that are endemic to New Zealand and are critically endangered. Only 236 adult kākāpō are alive today, so every chick is a milestone for the species!
