So... for the voicecom/screenshare usecase #xmpp is currently nogo. There is XEPs for 1-to-1 audio/video calls (called jingle) and mesh-varieties for jingle (so, p2p mesh where every participant connects to every other participant). This is absolutely not usable in any way, at least in the groups where I am. Even just pushing eight audio-streams to every participant, where participants are located evenly across whole Europe, UK and MENA... the bandwidth requirements alone are not reasonable and variable latency between every participant would make communicating impossible.

There is (or should be said, was?) https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0340.html for Zoom/Jitsi like conferences. That is apparently dead and no one uses it and wouldn't match the Discord like experience anyway with conference conductor.. thing.

Closest attempt for usable voice chat rooms seems to have been https://xmpp.org/extensions/inbox/av_conferences.html which on a surface level sounds like it matches Discordy-y lightweight voicecomms. Sadly Version: 0.0.1 (2024-07-29), so it has never been upgraded to proper XEP.

As I use #Conversations #XMPP client to chat with my family I configured it to be also an #UnifiedPush distributor.
This reuses the already existing XMPP connection to also serve other android apps for push messages.
On server side I used #ejabberd community module mod_unified_push.

It works nicely.
When I update event in nextcloud, DAVx⁵ gets notified and update is immediately synced to phone.
When I get new notification on Mastodon, Tusky is notified and notification shows on phone.

I hope more apps are going to support this in near feature.

I first installed an XMPP server back when it was Jabber over 20 years ago, and I remember chatting to people on Google Talk, before they decided to do their own thing. Having just installed Prosody ( #XMPP) and Tuwunel ( #Matrix) servers, both of which are excellent, I am personally of the opinion that XMPP is a lot more sensible.

As I use #Conversations #XMPP client to chat with my family I configured it to be also an #UnifiedPush distributor.

Mitte/Ende der 1990er mal ein bisschen IRC, in den 2000ern testweise #Jabber (mein antiquarischer @jabberdotorg Account existiert noch!), aber beides schnell wieder eingeschlafen, zugunsten von SMS.

Dann wollten wir ≈ 2014 Chat in der Firma und haben uns für Jabber ( #Prosody) entschieden. Seitdem nutze ich es viel, auch privat. IRC, SMS und Matrix via #XMPP gateways ( #biboumi, #sms4you, #slidge).
