OpenAI is a menace. Two recent stories make that clearer than ever.
One day you have Sam Altman denigrating humanity to defend AI. The next, WSJ reveals OpenAI could have alerted Canadian police of a potential mass shooter, but refused pressure from employees. That person went on to kill 8 people.

"Communities across the US are winning against environmental racism.
In Texas, Alabama, Georgia, and more, residents are packing council meetings, collecting signatures, and using their collective power to push back against destructive AI data centers. Our future will be written by us, not tech profits."

I suspect this is due to the frequent dopamine kicks that iterating with GenAI agents yields.
I wonder if we're literally building an addiction.

> Before starting tasks, developers forecast that allowing AI will reduce completion time by 24%. After completing the study, developers estimate that allowing AI reduced completion time by 20%. Surprisingly, we find that allowing AI actually increases completion time by 19%--AI tooling slowed developers down. This slowdown also contradicts predictions from experts in economics (39% shorter) and ML (38% shorter).
@lilithsaintcrow It's a different quality & scale, though, or did many companies mandate NFT use to their employees? IMHO, this suggests additional factors.
Return-to-office, lack of #CleanAirForAll or vaccine acces, and #GenAI tools might of course have simply a similar timeline, but that list of studies (along side the known aftereffects of SARS1) clearly indicates _some_ organic/physiological impact.
How large that is? Unclear, but it's clearly better to not test it on your own brain.
@gittaca I don't attribute to Covid what can be explained by simple greed. Other techbro grifts (crypto, NFTs) followed this same cycle; I don't find this one substantially different and am wary of blaming it on a virus. To my mind these are two distinct, separate issues.

For anyone new to #Mastodon / the #Fediverse...
Just in case you were thinking about posting #AISlop that you refer to as #AIMusic / #AIArt or something Pro #AI - Here's a good example of how much WE DON'T WANT TO SEE / HEAR IT.

Gemini can now generate AI music for you, no lyrics required
With a simple prompt, you can generate 30 seconds of something like music.

@lilithsaintcrow This highlights, though, why this #GenAI scam continues to find fertile ground. It's a mental crutch. And in a world where #CoVID is being mostly ignored, a lot more brains will continue to get foggy…
"Look, I understand mistakes can happen when you're sick, but Edwards--who it should be noted is Ars' 'Senior AI Reporter'--has used AI not once but twice here, and in doing so has caused a huge amount of reputational damage for himself and his employer in the process."

@asrg Even if I laugh about the very ironic title (they clearly write that #AI is *no* existence or #intelligence that could die), this #zine is a good compilation for critical questions to ask and for thinking about #AIEthics and rules. A first starter for #activism.
