The 150-year old Yūsai-tei (祐斎亭) overlooks the Ōi-gawa (大堰川) in Arashiyama. Once a 'ryōri ryokan' (料理旅館), a traditional inn priding itself on its cuisine, the buildings are now a workshop and exhibition space for 'yume kōro' dyeing.
Windows and polished tables offer the perfect framing devices for the seasonal colours. The fresh greens of early summer and the deep reds of late autumn are particularly stunning.
The famed novelist Kawabata Yasunari (川端康成 1899-1972) wrote the book 'Sound of the Mountain' (山の音 'Yama-no-oto' 1949-54) at Yūsai-tei (祐斎亭). It's not difficult to see why he was inspired to write whilst staying here.
