HEY FEDI i gotta show of with something rn!
I made a right prediction 1 year and 3 months ago on what the steam controller will look like.
#valve #steamdeck #steamcontroller
Holy Shit, #Valve did a product launch in 2025 and did not mention AI a single fucking time. So refreshing.
steam machine is just so interesting.
It almost would push me to replace my desktop AND media machine in the living room (which is literally like 10m away)... but it's still new territory.
The specs kinda just seem better than my existing desktop (3700x + RX580), and probably better than the media server (Ryzen5PRO 2400G)... so not only is it space saving, but heat and electricity saving too
The cost would just be way too high though. Or maybe I can just use a laptop then as my "desktop" , and then gaming would happen in the living room (if wife is not watching TV or gaming herself)... 🤔
but also
why replace something that works, just because thing is better. consumerism bad and all

Quick reminder on the likely reason why Valve's New Steam Machine only supports #HDMI 2.0:
""At this time an open source HDMI 2.1 implementation is not possible without running afoul of the HDMI Forum requirements.""
This is what Alex Deucher, the maintainer of the amdgpu #kernel driver, said one and a half years ago here:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1417#note_2303163
And from the ticket it looks like the problem remains.
See also Alex's earlier comment from early 2021 in the ticket:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1417#note_830547
""HDMI 2.1 is not available on #Linux due to the HDMI Forum.""
I'd love to chat with someone (on or off camera) who's been following the #VR space for the last couple years about the Steam Frame. Specifically the implications it might have for Linux VR support going forward. (Not to mention what it could do for wider adoption of ARM and compatibility for that architecture...)
If you're interested please DM me.
