The fact alone, that a small company manages with a simple thing like "Device passwords" to provide IMAP with 2FAS otherwise to older devices, which Google just didn't do more than 3 years ago instead insisting on f*cking OAuth, even if you pay for their stuff.

@rotnroll666 Fair enough. I'm still struggling with the "what client" question. GMail's web fronted is really good - I haven't yet found any OSS alternative on the same level.
Maybe a local client is the way forward. Need to revisit Thunderbird et.al.
My ultimate plan is to run my own SMTP on some cheap vserver (with static IP) and forward anything to a SMTP/IMAP combo in the #homelab
